Re: In the short term I think Willy at high GHz will be great for AMD. It will only serve to raise the sweet spot speed.

I agree. AMD will have around half its production at 1GHZ or higher by the end of Q4, and in Q1, 1GHZ will be considered the minimum speed for a mid range system.

I don't know what Intel can do. They are supposed to have a stepping in the works that will let them binsplit reasonable quantities at 1GHZ, but it's doubtful they'll get volume at anything higher, and it doesn't look like they'll be anywhere near 50% of production even at 1GHZ.

And if AMD really does rollout large cache GHZ+ parts in January with dual processor DDR motherboards to go with them, the Xeon cash cow will be gutted as well. AMD will get very few wins, at first, but Intel will not be able to sell even an 800MHZ 1meg cache Xeon for $1,500 when AMD is selling GHZ chips with 1meg cach for less than $1,000.

We've waited quite a while for such parts, however, so we just have to wait and see what happens, there is no firm release date yet. Maybe there will be clearer guidance at MDF or the earnings announcement.

Regards,

Dan
