EXFO Provides RFTS Installation for BESTEL

biz.yahoo.com

QUEBEC CITY, Quebec--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 2000--EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering Inc. (NASDAQ:EXFO - news; TSE:EXF. - news) announced today it has successfully completed the installation of a remote fiber test system (RFTS) for BESTEL S.A. de C.V., a Mexican telecommunications service provider.

EXFO has provided Bestel with 18 RTUs that cover more than 4000 kilometres of cable for its high-capacity voice and data network. Monitoring extends from Laredo on the U.S. border to Puebla, south of Mexico City, and from Mazatlan in the west to San Luis in the east.

``When we completed and then handed off this phase of the project to BESTEL, we knew we were passing along network quality, service, and reliability,'' said Germain Lamonde, Chairman, CEO, and President of EXFO. ``Our RFTS, better known as FiberVisor, is designed to foster preventive maintenance. It is all about keeping service high and downtime low.''

``The RFTS market has tremendous potential,'' Lamonde added. ``We have released a second-generation RFTS that contains many new features, including wavelength monitoring to detect faulty channels in DWDM systems.''

FiberVisor is a permanently installed fault surveillance system in which EXFO test equipment is connected to a communications network. Strategically located RTUs continually check optical links and send test data to a centralized test system controller. Upon detecting a problem, the system sends out an alarm to a repair crew.

Since FiberVisor features a sophisticated mapping system, problems can be located and fixed quickly, often before they result in costly downtime. The scalable FiberVisor system provides additional benefits such as network security, alarm management, cable and data management, and open architecture for TMN compatibility.

Open Question: This maybe more a function of the customer network but 4000mi/18 = 222.22 miles per RTU. Would that number hold up for other networks? Just trying to get handle on the addressable market of EXFO. I don't know of any solid market stats for fiber/DWDM test equipment.
