Notebook-PC shipments are expected to jump 31.5 percent this year to 24.4 million units, almost a quarter of the approximately 100 million total PCs expected to ship in 2000, according to a DisplaySearch report released Wednesday. Despite shortages of thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD panels for notebooks in the early months of 2000, passive-matrix LCD sales continued to decline, the report showed.
Instead of picking up some of the notebook flat panel display business that active-matrix TFT-LCDs were unable to meet, passive STN panel shipments slipped to 9.7 percent of all LCD shipments in the second quarter, down from 13 percent in the same period a year ago.
The DisplaySearch notebook report, co-authored by former strategy executives with Dell Computer Corp. (stock: DELL), Round Rock, Texas, and Compaq Computer Corp. (stock: CPQ), Houston, ranked Dell as the leading global TFT-LCD notebook supplier with a 16 percent market share in the second quarter.
Toshiba was second with 12 percent, followed by IBM Corp. (stock: IBM) with 11 percent.
Broken down by notebook panels size, Dell was first in 14.1- and 15-in.-screen systems, while IBM led in the 13.3-in. category.
Toshiba led the market in notebook PCs with 12.1-in. displays, while Sony Corp. (stock: SNE) paced the market for systems with screens smaller than 12.1 inches.
DisplaySearch said panels of 14.1 inches and larger accounted for 54 percent of all shipments in the second quarter, double the 26.1 percent share for the same quarter a year ago. High resolution XGA notebooks showed up for the first time in the quarter, gaining a 2.7 percent market share.
DisplaySearch forecast XGA notebooks would comprise 26 percent of the market in mid-2002 |
