I've also been told that LE wants to avoid diluting his holdings at ORCL, and so part of the arrangement with the board (perhaps implicit -- or perhaps this is just nonsense that someone told me) is that he gets options in proportion to increases in the stock float. No matter what, it's a lot of shares, but it's still not enough doesn't negatively affect the share price, and as long as he's motivated to push himself and the company, I'm delighted for him to get it. Certainly the money as such (as opposed to "winning") doesn't matter. I imagine that after the first few billion you stop worrying about your salary...
