Because the Major Labels threw their entire weight behind these big name acts. Whar we are hearing less and less about are breakout bands and smaller acts. The popular acts are getting fewer and fewer in number and more and more hyped.

The big time sufferers in the free mp3 phenomenon are bands trying to "Make It." These are bands that depend very much on CD sales to get noticed by labels and get pushed and backing up to the next level of success.

Touring does not make money for most bands.
