Safeway is a good suitor, as they have no presence in the Northeast. However, the region is the most competitive area in the country for supermarkets, and such an acq would severely damage SWY's extraordinary level of profitability. Why do you think Kroger and Safeway are so profitable? Because they stay away from the Northeast.
