In that famous indident Kurlack downgraded Intel (around 55 I think) and then upgraded it around 75 (this is a couple of splits back). Louis Rukeyser made fun of him on Wall Street Week, arguing that it was hard to understand how it was more desireable to buy it a few weeks later at 75 then to short it or sell it at 55. That was the beginning of the end for Kurlack, who was then berated humerously but publicly by Craig Barrett at a stockholder's meeting for preventing Merrill Lynch customers from being holders of Intel. That was the beginning of some great posts on SI about why analysts try to become the AXE on big stocks (because they are rewarded lavishly for that status).
