Hey -- you guys love style over substance. Doesn't surprise me at all that you could form an opinion of the debate with the sound turned off.

By focusing on tone, appearance, reaction, and poise -- not character, policy positions, integrity, intelligence -- voters make poor choices. Hence, Bill Clinton.

And I flatly reject the notion that presenting to or arguing before the press is a qualification of a U.S. Senator. I sure don't want an elected official spending a second of his time worrying about presenting to reporters. They are not his constituents -- although virtually all politicans treat them as if they are. That's one of the major problems.

You (and of course, corporate media) want Lazio to revere the glowing tube and resent that he actually acts like a thoughtful human being.

Style over substance is a key contributor to the decline of public discourse since Nixon-Kennedy in '60. Radio listeners agreed that Nixon won the debate on substance. But people watching saw style. And in an election that close, it was surely the difference.
