Net2Phone Inc. Up 7% On Internet Talk Of New Venture
Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Speculation that Net2Phone Inc. (NTOP) might be entering a venture for the creation of a new Internet telephony gateways company sent shares of the New Jersey Internet concern up Thursday.

The only official news issued by the company Thursday was an agreement with LG Electronics Co. (Q.LGE) to incorporate Net2Phone's technology into LG's gateways.

However, several visitors of the message board Yahoo! Finance on Thursday attributed the rise in share price to a deal between the telephony company and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) that, if true, could be announced as soon as Monday.

Officials of both companies weren't immediately available for comment.

This is not the first time rumors of a Cisco-Net2Phone deal hit trading desks.

On Friday, Aug. 18, reporter David Faber said in his daily report on CNBC that the two companies were "expected to announce shortly the creation of a new company that will manufacture and sell Internet telephony gateways." However, the following Monday, the company said the rumor was unfounded.

Shares Of Net2Phone were recently trading at $31.25, up 7.5% on volume of 697,700 compared with average daily volume of 462,500.
