charter schools

There is a standing offer from a Boston philanthropist (Lovett Peters) to reward successful charter schools in the city. Basically he is betting that in 5 years the worst schools (22 are identified) would exceed the average in the state. The payoff is $1 million and return to regular status if the project fails.

Answers to his proposal:

Lynn, Mass. Superintendent Mazareas "Unless someone can show me a program that can guarantee our kids' future, why would I gamble"

Boston Supe, Payzant says such ideas "don't work for kids" "Why would we turn over a building, kids and educational responsibility to an unknown group in running schools, with the expectation that we'd only get a return on an investment if they failed?" It's not as if the status quo wasn't failure.

New York is achieving some success in this direction, and in fact this has driven the Unions to propose loosening embedded regulations.
