Union brothers and sisters are a little less malleable than some think: Vice President Al Gore got caught in the middle of a feud Wednesday between Mayor Daley and police unions over City Hall's refusal to negotiate the effects of mandatory retirement. Furious with Daley and intent on embarrassing him, unions representing 1,500 Chicago police sergeants and lieutenants rescinded an invitation to Gore to speak at a convention of the Police Benevolent and Protective Association in Rockford on Sept. 30. They invited Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush instead. suntimes.com
