TWO NEW POLLS SHOW GORE AHEAD
Wednesday, September 13, 2000 04:38 AM EDT
Washington, Sep 13, 2000 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Two polls released Wednesday show Democratic presidential candidate Albert Gore leading his opponent, George W. Bush, who was well ahead in the polls just a few months ago.
A survey published by The New York Times in conjunction with CBS television revealed that 42 percent of registered voters would support Gore if the election were today, while 39 would vote for Bush.
Gore enjoys greater support among women voters, garnering 46 percent among female respondents, up six points from July.
Among male respondents, 45 percent intend to vote for Bush, but the Texas governor's support from women voters declined eight points.
A Reuters/Zogby poll, also released Wednesday, shows Gore with a seven-point advantage over Bush, 46 percent to 39 percent.
The New York Times poll also suggests that Gore has succeeded in changing his image and convincing voters that he has the leadership qualities necessary to be president.
Some 44 percent of those polled have a favorable opinion of Al Gore, while 42 percent feel the same way about Bush.
Two months ago, the difference between the candidates was more than 20 points in Bush's favor.
The survey also revealed that 49 percent of those polled expressed confidence in the vice president's ability to handle an international crisis, up from 43 percent two months ago.
Bush has maintained a 46 percent confidence rating during the same time period. EFE
