WINDWind River Hails Use of VxWorks, pSOSystem In Human Genome Decoding
Presents `Cool Customer Design' Award to Applied Biosystems

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 2000--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today presented its ``Cool Customer Design'' award to Applied Biosystems for its ABI PRISM® 3700 DNA Analyzer (http://www.windriver.com/products/html/abi_prism_ccd.html). Based on Wind River's VxWorks® and pSOSystem® real-time operating systems (RTOSs), the Applied Biosystems 3700 DNA Analyzer is used by major genome centers worldwide, including those who participated in the historical achievement of decoding the human genome, or human genetic blueprint. Applied Biosystems (NYSE:PEB - news), like Celera Genomics (NYSE:CRA - news), is a business unit of PE Corporation.

In a June 26, 2000 White House ceremony, President Clinton congratulated Celera Genomics (Rockville, Md.) and the publicly funded Human Genome Project on this revolutionary contribution to mankind. The massive database of 3.18 billion base pairs of DNA in the human body, collectively known as the genome, promises to revolutionize the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of most, if not all, human diseases in the coming decades. Both institutions continue to use the 3700 DNA Analyzer for ongoing DNA analysis such as the identification of genetic differences among individuals.

Celera Genomics used 300 of the Applied Biosystems analyzers to form the basis of the world's largest DNA sequencing facility, taking merely hours to process huge amounts of raw genetic data -- between 100,000 and 200,000 samples per day -- which in the past took researchers months, if not years. The sequenced order of the genetic data is the basis of all diversity, and determines not only eye color and hair texture, but also whether an organism is a human, a fruit fly, or an elephant.

``Unlocking the key to the human genome is the 21st century equivalent of the printing press,'' said Curt Schacker, vice president of marketing at Wind River. ``Wind River is proud to have made such a significant contribution to this major milestone in the history of science, medicine, and technology.''

``We evaluated many RTOSs and chose Wind River's technology for its built-in functionality,'' said Robert C. Jones, vice president of Informatics for Applied Biosystems. ``Wind River gave us all the features and tools we needed for high performance, real-time control, and networking, which meant we didn't have to design pieces of code. This kind of one-stop shopping helped us cut our development time significantly.''
