the margin of error
Even more important than sample size is how the sample is selected. The fancy math works out if the people polled are selected at random. Where are all sorts of ways that non-random selection can occur. If the poll is taken in the evening it skips second-shift workers. If it's a rainy night more people may be at home, while if it's league night many bowling enthusiasts will be at the lanes. Sampling error introduces more uncertainty into statistics than does sample size.
