Interesting opinions but as always I think you are wrong. CSCO has demonstrated that the horizontal model works and that owning a semi, manufacturing, or integration business isn't critical to success. In fact NT and LU are following CSCO's horizontal approach in many areas so I think you are wrong and I think Russo took a very strong position with the interview which is what I consider a good response. A bad response would be to waiver and sit on the fence. It's clear CSCO has a vision, understands it well, and is looking to execute... the question now is in the execution which - again contrary to your opinions - looks to be doing pretty well considering CSCO entered the optical market only 12 months ago. A $1B run rate growing at 100%+ in 12 months... not bad IMO. Yes NT has a huge lead but one can not say that JNPR is taking it to CSCO in the high end router by chipping away a little market share in one quarter and not say that CSCO isn't having an impact in the optical markets.

As for NT's need to have control over their opto-electronics supply. If they do this they'll need to run more than one business (notwithstanding all the other overhead they have) which will make them less adept at selling against a company that is purpose driven and focused at selling systems. This allows CSCO to pump all resources, executive engergy and company resources at building systems to go after NT's market..... and if they succeed NT will have less of a need to own the opto-electronics division and will have missed an opportunity to build relationships with a new customer - CSCO... and then a spin-off will be too late.

I think it would be short sighted of NT to think they can go it alone here and I can guarantee you that Roth is looking beyond this year and next... He'll need to pull the trigger on this soon or it'll simply end up being a case of too little too late. I don't expect you to agree with me so we'll leave it at this.
