Lizzie re maternity/paternity leave, I am in favor of it, I just do not want the government to MANDATE it.

Because I am self-employed, I am subject to the whims of the marketplace. If the marketplace does not reward me, the government doesn't step in to give me a hand.

Why should it be any different for employees? Let the marketplace determine work conditions. During low un-employment times, benefits will be good because companies are competing for workers.

During periods of high un-employment, benefits will be less favorable. During these periods, the government should do what it can to increase employment (lower interest rates, etc.), but I don't think it has any business getting involved in the employer/employee relationship.
