PGMs pick up on strike news, gold drifts in range
(UPDATE: Updates with afternoon fix)

LONDON, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Platinum picked up in London afternoon trade on Friday, after workers at the world's largest platinum producer said they would strike from Monday.

South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said its members at Anglo American Platinum Corp (Amplats) would down tools from Monday night in a dispute over wages and working conditions.

Amplats is the world's biggest platinum producer, with annual production of two million ounces.

``Platinum and palladium both looked stronger on the back of the news coming out of South Africa which would explain the upward move,'' one dealer said.

The metal was last indicated higher at $590.00/$594.50 a troy ounce from $584.00/$583.00 at Thursday's New York close, but off an intraday high of $591.90.

The afternoon fix was $586.00, just up from the previous fix of $584.00.

Platinum had edged lower in early morning on talk of deliveries of metal into Zurich, but dealers said the market would not make any decisive moves until the talk was confirmed and deliveries proven.

Palladium followed its sister metal up, last quoted at $722.00/$732.00 despite weakness earlier in the day which came as a dealer unwound a position.

The afternoon fix was higher at $722.00 from the $708.00 morning fix.
