Check out NTAP's DAFS initiative as a possible fix for the file vs block issue. Mainframe storage was primarily tape, and now optical, so it is faster to move blocks of data rather than individual files. Backup and mirroring are faster with blocks also. I'm not surprised that NTAP would love to see Ethernet direct file access.
