That's an excellent question. Others should take note of your direct questioning style. I will name four GOP-ers that came to mind immediately.
I admire former Sen. John Danforth of Missouri. He is a man of integrity as well as a man of the cloth. When he said "This is what happened at Waco," everyone, regardless of party affiliation, believed him.
I always had admiration for Barry Goldwater. He was a man of high principle who opened the door for many who followed. The man could be attacked for his positions but not for his integrity. He was a straight-shooter from the Wild West.
And, in an odd sort of way, I admire Jim Bunning, the Hall-of-Fame pitcher and senator from Kentucky. He is a conservative Catholic, has never been anything but ... he has been married to the same woman for close to half a century, has about nine kids, all of whom are successful. When he talks about family values, one doesn't have to go to the archives of the GOP Hall of Shame to look up his ERA. Jim Bunning is a decent and honest man. He says here is where I stand and if you don't agree with me, don't vote for me. I don't agree with him on many of the issues, but when he talks about family values, I pay attention, because he has put his life where his mouth is.
Gerald Ford would be my fourth. He is a good and decent man and served the country extraordinarily well after Nixon resigned. I voted for Ford over Carter in '76 and have never regretted my vote. |
