Rambus follows up on Infineon lawsuit

Sep. 15, 2000 (Electronic Engineering Times - CMP via COMTEX) -- MOUNTAIN VIEW,
CALIF. - Continuing a patent fight, Rambus Inc. last week sued Infineon
Technologies AG in Germany, accusing it of infringing Rambus synchronous DRAM
patents. Rambus has similar cases filed in Europe against Micron Technology Inc.
and Hyundai Electronics Industries Co.

Last month, Rambus sued Infineon in the U.S. District Court in Virginia.
Infineon has promised to fight the suit.

Rambus has pressed DRAM makers for new licensing agreements and extra royalties
from patents covering SDRAMs, DDR memories and controllers and their interfaces.

Infineon, Micron and Hyundai have refused to pay those royalties, and Micron and
Hyundai have separately sued Rambus. Meanwhile, Japanese chip firms NEC,
Hitachi, Toshiba and Oki have agreed to the royalties, and it appears that the
NEC-Hitachi joint venture will follow suit (see page 18).
