I recently opened an account here online. I was approved in like 10 seconds. Really fast.
Today, my funds hit the account however, it still wouldnt let me place orders for stocks under $5. I am guessing its because the checks have not cleared.

While no broker is perfect, I have been paying $7-19 per trade for imperfection so I might as well do it for free.
I will not get rid of my Datek account. And I will miss the telephone confirm calls that my $19 broker provides. But with the commission savings, I will make do.

I assume the route through NITE although I am not sure.

As for the billpay, I thought it was free with a large account ?
Nearly everyone has account closing fees.

Other alternatives seem to be RJT.COM which seems ok from my limited experience with a relatives small account and lowtrades.com which is $4 commissions.

I do not think that a name company like AMEX is any more devious than the rest of the brokerages. They simply are willing to make less to control larger accounts. Fine with me.
