The IEEE 802.113 Working Group on MAC enhancements meets next week, and centralized vs distributed scheduling is the hot QOS topic. Thanks for the upstream pointer to GigE, as I found there a paper on Packet Burst, where many smaller packets are allowed to use the media in one time grant:

802.11 has a conservative backoff algorithm, leading to low utilization of the shared media, so we are reinventing the wheel in these MAC proposals.
