Has anyone considered the question of what happens to the financial markets when we do not have trillions of US government back debt where funds can be "parked" during periods of uncertainty? Will the market buy Japanese debt at 0% return, or less developed countries' debt with potential of default? I for one, hope they leave some debt on the table just for that purpose. If we have an economy of about $8 to $10 Trillions in the next few years, a debt level of 20%/40% like $2-$4 trillion would actually be desirable if for no other reasons than to provide liquidity in the markets. I would hate to see insurance companies and retirement funds being forced to be 100% into the stock markets, particularly when the S&P valuation is as high as it is now. That is asking for a real financial disaster in the future.
