Lewis pretty much hits it with his column. He certainly speaks for me when he says: << I do not think that Secretary Richardson or Attorney General Janet Reno decided overtly to use the Lee case for political purposes. I think that, feeling the political pressure, they allowed their judgment to be shockingly distorted. For the Justice Department especially to go on and on with a case so weak is profoundly disturbing. To let the terrible weapon of criminal prosecution be used in a politically convenient way is a hallmark of tyranny. >>
But let's not forget Cox's report. Where has that disappeared to, released with such gusto and indignation at the Democrats' shocking, just shocking lapses of security, endangering our national security so. Indeed, to hear some conservatives rant, Taiwan should have been invaded about 3 or 4 times now over the past 3 years (the latest one should be sometime this month--don't hold your breath, though, the predictions are always made months in advance, then when the time comes, they are conveniently forgotten, rather like some evangelical Christians with the Rapture).
Far be for me to condone how Lee was treated. But there is plenty of blame for both parties to share, including Congress, the FBI, the judiciary, the executive branch. And just who was that FBI agent who lied working for anyway? Why exactly did he lie ("a honest mistake", he called it!)? Under whose direction, and with what motive? That would be an interesting thread to follow, though he who follows it should probably have a bullet-proof vest.
