<What were the "benches" done on - SDRAM ?>

DDR

<Sounds like a bad time to intro the Muskrat - AMD and its distributors are stocked to the GILLS with unsold AThWipeys, poor availability of existing SDRAM chips sets,>

I don't think distributors are stocked to gills yet. That will happen if October demand is low. Rumors are that July, August were extremely good and there was no inventory buildup for the first two months. And Durons kicking-in at the mid-range should help get back some of those sockets lost to Celeron couple of months back.

< and - as you noted - less than "stellar" improvements on DDR chip sets - >

That is not my line it is Scumbria's. I think people will be in for a surprise if they are not expecting to see "stellar" improvements with DDR - especially with Mustang. Anand's Thunderbird/DDR pre-production preview is just a sign of things to come. The numbers I hear will leave P4 in dust assuming P4 does not improve much by the time it gets to production. I am sure both sides have a few surprises and it is going to be an interesting Q4.

<which themselves are not available.>

This is the real downside. This industry hasn't learned to ramp anything beyond PC133.

<Oh well - the Muskrat is very low power - and will immediately knock Intel out of the high end notebook PC business - right? >

Ah well, what "could be" and what "is" are different things - especially when it comes to AMD. Nevertheless, once released, Athlon with DDR is going to be a killer high power laptop platform for AMD in more ways than one.

You should be glad that Intel continues to go almost unchallenged in the laptop scene. Desktop side is going to be high risk for Intel in Q4. 1GHz Thunderbirds will be sub-$300 and 750MHz Durons will be sub $100 by the middle of Q4 if not sooner. And if demand does not pickup, Jerry has the option of ramping MHz and slashing prices.
