Pat: Inside your quotes are all applications/services that will utilize the high speed network. I think I have a beta copy of NetShow at home that will show stream video from the MSNBC site. Oh.. by the way that site in now charging ~$20/month for access. I removed that link yesterday from my bookmarks.

The whole concept of placing the NT "New Technology- MS - new Operating System" server in the CO is interesting. I don't think MS/GTE wants to fall behind the ORACLE/SUN/Belgium-Teleco in placing the servers and applications at the CO. By placing the servers in the CO, the number of hops "Router term" is Zero or One. To make a long story short, to go from 1 router to the next is called a hop. What a network designer should do is reduce the number of hops a message takes ... thereby reducing the overall network traffic on the WAN.

When thinking of routers, think about every packet being looked at, when thinking of switches, think of the telephone call. It takes some initial time to setup a PVC "Permanent Virtual Circuit", but once setup each cell isn't examined, making it much faster. For Video this is the way to go... Switching not routing.

PPTP.. ala.. tunneling is a protocol that allows a way through a firewall. Most firewalls block incoming traffic on most ports. The idea of tunneling is to open a secure port.."tunnel" so you can have your corporate users come through the firewall. (ex) KMART doesn't want to manage a modem pool in their building, so they let their users connect to an ISP's modem pool. If a tunnel is setup the user can pass through the firewall into the corporate intranet. I haven't worked with PPTP that closely so feel free to correct me.. anyone!!

Thanks for the information on the new 820 modem... as you know I really like the 1.5 aspect with extended reach of 18,000ft.

PS. I'm sure I'll have some follow up.. until later.
