Handicapped parking ...

In my area, handicapped parking privileges are granted to people after an assessment by their doctor. It seems a fair enough system. As for relatives using the tagged car, this is clearly an abuse that's difficult to counteract.

I once heard a person yelling across a parking lot to some guy that the space he was occupying was reserved for the physically handicapped. (The insult went misunderstood!)

As for being too fat...

Could there be additional physical problems making handicapped parking appropriate for this person: Problems not apparent to a casual observer in a parking lot, but which are nevertheless debilitating? Could the person's weight be an outward manifestation of some deeper and more profound medical problem? Until we know the entire story, and who can, we'd be better off delaying the formation of our opinions.

Having said this, I also think it's reasonable that if a person cannot fit into an airline seat without a slab of flab overflowing into the seat space of the next passenger, special accommodation should be made available. A person- and-a-half should pay a fare-and-a half: Or double, if appropriate. Why should I be forced to pay a surcharge because my luggage is ten pound over the limit while the fat guy travels with an extra hundred pounds of lard? At least I put my stuff in the cargo bin -- not in the cabin where it becomes a nuisance for other passengers.

Back to fat parking tags --- Just another thought ...

In our area most handicapped spaces are a little roomier. I think car doors need to be opened wider for heavier people and they could use the extra elbow (arse) room.

Cheers, PW.
