Was vacationing in CA last week and stopped by Napa for a couple days. Called AWG and spoke with Mac Jennings who is the Winery manager. He stated that he has a major stake in AWG because of his heavy stock holdings and "wouldn't be holding this position if I didn't think the stock will eventually do very well." AWG is currently collaborating with the Peppi Winery for actual production. Mac indicated that the vineyard isn't too impressive because the front portion bordering the road is being replanted. Business plan has recently been massively revised after the failed attempt to purchase Stags Leap. New plan apparently is on track.

We drove out to the vineyard at 4162 Big Ranch Road in the heart of the valley and eyeballed our investment. He was right, not very impressive at this point. A large open field with a treed "oasis" in the middle consisting of a handful of nondescript buildings. The front 20 or so acres is entirely barren with recently tilled soil. The back 40 or so acres was completely covered in grape vines. No actual winery or tasting room. Surrounded on all sides by other vineyards.

Mac indicated that Mario himself is taking a very active role in the business and stops by the vineyard monthly.

We had to hunt for it but we were eventually able to locate a wine shop that carried Andretti wine. Bought a couple of bottles of Andretti Merlot for about $25 apiece. Haven't tried it yet, not that my opinion would mean anything anyway. The store manager indicated that they sold all they could get (which wasn't much, apparently) and felt that prospects for the wine were quite good because of the Andretti name. Other wineries spend millions over many years and rarely attain the name recognition that Andretti already has.

All in all, I felt better about my investment, if only because I could actually see some tangible assets and activities taking place. This is one smallcap that we would all probably be better off stashing in a file cabinet and forgetting about for the next 5 to 10 years.
