Scumbria,

The current high petrol taxes were implemented by the Tory government in the early 90's. But facts should never interfere with theory on the Rambus thread.

The petrol (gas) duty "escalator" was indeed introduced by the Tories, but the concept was gladly adopted and enhanced by New Labour.

If you really want to start a raging debate, just mention IR35. This is the new scheme whereby the owners of small businesses can be taxed according to the salary that the Inland Revenue deems them to have taken, rather than what their income actually is.

Many IT people are leaving the UK as a result, and the government is now introducing measures to facilitate the entry of replacements from other countries.
