HJ:

1) Oil's impact on the economy: article makes a good point about the complications (ahhh, the ifs, and's and butts of macroeconomics!). I can't help but think that LT prices above 30$/barrel take money out of consumers' pockets (slowing the economy down), but also augmenting inflation (thus pressuring interest rates). Overall, a modest negative for old econ stocks (more dependent on oil), and a slight negative for new econ stocks (due to their lofty valuations).

2) Significance of this week's market decline: the market's bias is to the downside. Earnings warnings don't seem all that widespread, so all this fretting appears to be an excuse to sell because there's no reason to buy. We keep flirting with important support levels, so that continues to be worrisome. Still up in the air as to whether they will be breached. A risk adverse investor would want to squirrel away some dry powder, I would think.
