Kyros.. I appreciate your "reasoned" response..

First of all.. to answer responses..
1. They embraced CDMA and chose it as their satellite air interface at a time when many in the industry thought it would never work.

2. They built a satellite system whose cost per minute is an order of magnitude cheaper than its only competitor -- Iridium -- and is far superior in terms of upgradability and call quality to boot. They beat one of the premier technology companies -- Motorola -- to the punch.

Both 1 and 2 are to be credited to Qualcomm.. Remember, Linkabit (Jacobs company before QCOM )was actually involved in a the initial discussions and development of a Spread Spectrum LEO communications system for the govt... An idea that Jacobs fostered with him when Qualcomm began.. In the early 1990's Qualcomm was in no financial position to undertake such a huge undertaking.. So Qualcomm found SS/L and BLS to fund the space segment.. Qualcomm was to develop the technology portion. You seem to believe that BLS had started this whole concept.. It was Qualcomm and Jacobs.. I doubt that BLS had any 'vision' about a CDMA Spread Spectrum system and hence BLS did not embrace CDMA, CDMA was embraced upon BLS.. And again. If you look at the "simplicity" of the "bent pipe system".. All SS/L did was design giant repeaters in the sky.. No smarts up there like Iridium had.. I doubt that such a design / technonogy was "very complex" for SS/L to build..

All the upgradable technology is on the ground remember.. and Qualcomm did all the hard parts..

So no.. I can not revel in BLS vision.. The vision was Qualcomm's/ Jacobs from the Linkabit days.. BLS job was to:
Build and launch the space segment.
Secure financing for the project to profitability
Sign on Worldwide Service Providers
Manage the Service Providers and make sure they do the marketing!!

That's about it!! While Qualcomm had to:
Design the system architecture,
Design and build Gateways
Design and build User Terminals
Design and build interfaces into the PSTN's

Now they have to "market and find creative uses for the system."
Develop alternative data applications (IFN etc.)
Contine to provide Financing.. etc.

So I don't see what great achievements BLS has accomplished!!

And it appears that we agree on number 3.

They now own invaluable worldwide spectrum for voice and data, for which they have paid very little. In a few years, the immense value of this spectrum will become apparent. BLS does have a habit of getting bargains for his stockholders, even if they are not immediately apparent -- for example, Loral's orbital slots.

I believe that BLS understands the inherent value of orbital slots.. And I agree that, within a given time frame.. The value of these orbital slots will become apparent.. And I would prefer Loral's available cash be used to acquire as many of these orbital slots as possible at the current market rate values.. Orbital Slots are the most valuable pieces of real estate in the world!! That is why I own LORAL!!
