"Gigabit demand fuels growth in LAN switching
By Ted McKenna, TelekomNet
Sept. 14

Local area network managers fighting the bandwidth crunch use switches to create more room on their networks, and the LAN switching market is growing as a result.

Worldwide, port shipments of LAN switches are expected to rise from fewer than 79,000 in 1999 to 231,000 by 2004, with revenues during the same time increasing from $13.2 million to $28.7 million, according to market research firm IDC."

"Besides LANs, Ethernet switches are also used in wide area and metropolitan area networks. Combined, the market is worth an estimated $522 million today, and will rise to $4 billion by 2001, according to research firm Dell'Oro Group"
