"the commercials begging people to sue leave the impression that eyes bulge with dollar signs" Yes, personal injury cases are all about money. Why should that surprise anyone? A lawyer can't change the past, he can't make your injuries go away, all he can do is make sure you are compensated for them (i.e., get you money). When people start talking about capping damages, etc., what they are really talking about is eliminating the jury system.
