100,

<< I have never added anything or upgraded anything in Windows without a major headache ... No USB >>

If you do not have USB, you could be in for a hastle. If your physical serial port is available, your OK. If it is not your into a SCSI approach, or you'll need a USB card or a Serial port to USB adaptor.

If you are into USB, you are best off upgrading to WIN98SE or ME, if you have not yet done so.

USB is easiest approach, but does not guarantee success.

I recently took delivery of a new desktop platform from Dell. With it was a free UMAX USB scanner. When I cabled the platform I attached 4 USB devices (including the scanner) using a USB hub, a printer on the parallel port, and a printer on the serial port. Everything worked but the scanner. I decided to troubleshoot it on a rainy day.

Two days later a 2nd USB scanner (this time a Visioneer) showed up from Dell. I called Dell to ask why the 2nd scanner. They asked me if the first one worked. I said no but I thought I knew why. They told me I could troubleshoot it till the cows came home and it wouldn't work. A basic incompatibility with the new Dimension 4100 platform.

I plugged in the new scanner, loaded the software, and I was off and running.

Your right. Adding devices can be a headache.

USB is great. Best if preinstalled on a new platform. Easiest route, get a new box. I realize thats not always possible or justifiable.
