Joe The reason I am skeptical about mass transit is that it is run by the wrong people, the supporters are wrong people who care more about feeling good about themselves than about achieving results, and the employees of all these mass transit schemes are union employees, actually public sector union employees (the worst kind), for whom the convenience of their "customers" never crosses their mind. In spite of its extensive transit system, I don't know that NYC is indicative of the rest of the country. I think politics sidestep innovation. The last time I was there, i was surprised to see that they still had people dispensing tokens and tickets instead of automatic equipment. I think the most impressive thing done by the NYC transit officials was the clean up the subway cars of urine and graffiti. I hope you understand my skepticism. I am actually talking out of experience. I guess I am the only person on this thread who does not own a car and uses public transportation regularly. Although I own a car, I use mass transit as much as feasible. I think your skepticism is justified...until the last 10-15 years, I think we paid lip service to improving mass transit. However with the increasing automobile congestion coupled with the public opposition to new freeways, a new and stronger attention is being given to mass transit. The only improvement that I found in the last 17 years I lived in New York City is that the present mayor and the police department managed to get people to urinate less in the subways and he managed to prevent the beggars from assaulting the passengers as much as they used to. That was an impressive job but there are newer innovations that NYC could implement. I mention some of them in another post. However, in NYC, they only way that will happen is to reduce the politics involved....a formidable task. ted
