Gus, THe evaluator gp. hosted a online discussion on SANs...

searchstorage.com

arter.mia909291 : Where is responsibility for SAN management falling in most organizations - the network team or the storage team and why?

Randy_Kerns : Storage management team. Without a doubt. We're seeing many of our end-user customers forming new groups that specifically deal with storage management and networking. The network teams are not involved in storage for everyone we've talked with.

....

jhaake132726 : What about NAS and network teams? With NAS so taxing on CPU. won't the complaints come rolling in if a NAS is implemented?

Randy_Kerns : You've got. It's an inherent problem where network access using TCP greatly increase processor utilization due to the implementation of segmentation and reassembly and interrupt processing in the processor. NAS fits, but not everywhere.

Why is virtualization so important?

Randy_Kerns : It enables the ability to manage storage with a common set of tools which significantly drives down administration costs. It makes the implementation of policy-based storage management practical. It will allow usage of heterogeneous storage without adding to administrative costs.
