Applied James Bond: Never Say Never

Capital equipment giant Applied Materials Inc. announced last fall its
participation in an electron-beam-projection lithography consortium through
eLith, its joint venture with Dutch lithography toolmaker ASML. On the heels of
that announcement came the acquisition of mask equipment maker Etec
Systems. Rumors have been swirling around the Santa Clara, Calif.-based
toolmaker for some time. Is an Applied stepper or scanner in the near future?
Jim Morgan, chief executive officer, didn’t say yes to that question at a
technical conference on reticles last week, but then he didn’t exactly say no,
either. Applied looks at what customers need, Morgan said. If a customer is
well-served in a particular market segment, Applied will look to work with
customers and create partnerships in order to leverage value. But Applied won’t
get directly involved in a market unless there is a cost or technical issue that
Applied can address. “Just adding sales dollars isn’t one of our high priorities,”
Morgan said.
