Re: Itanium continues to be a no-show as SUN finally gets Ultrasparc III out

Dan,

Sun is pulling a desperation act by releasing the US III now.

zdnet.com

At the event, Sun will showcase the first UltraSPARC III desktop and server. The one-processor, rack- mount ed server, which is based on a new architecture code-named Serengeti, will target the low end of the market, while all new servers should be shipped by the end of April 2001, sources said.

That's something to make you go hmmmm....

Let's see, doesn't this look like AMD and the Athlon a little?

SMP enabled chips are released, but no chipset to go with them. Given how "well" all chip companies have met deadlines lately, I bet this one slips to the middle of next year at the earliest.

Sun is in big trouble in chip world. What's the problem? Who knows, but there's obviously something wrong with the SMP configurations.
