This article is almost a year old, but look what I found!

"Williams Communications has been trying out these concepts in a network, linking sites in Alabama and Mississippi, in which ATM switches from Lucent and Ascend are interfaced with DWDM transponder systems from Sycamore Networks Inc. ATM traffic can move directly to DWDM systems at 2.5 Gbits/second, with no intervening Sonet ADM equipment."

eetimes.com

Note the mention of Williams Communications and Sycamore networks. Note the reference to ATM and DWDM w/o SONET at 2.5Gbps (OC-48 speeds).

Now remember that these two companies now turn up as investors in Charlotte's Web, which not only handles ATM and SONET (or not) and DWDM, but at OC-192 speeds. Gee, I don't think Lucent can move ATM data at those speeds yet - and their switches don't support BOTH ATM and GE, but Aranea does.

Now look at the Sycamore architecture (lots of internal links to check out too)

sycamorenet.com

Note the mention of ATM, SONET, and GE. Aranea supports those too, at monster speeds and port densities.

Aranea is a very good fit here with Sycamore equipment.

Interesting? Now we can see why they invested in CWNT. I bet LU is no longer in the picture (unless of course those CWNT buyout rumors with LU mentioned have some substance). But I bet some nice contracts may soon be coming Charlotte's way - unless LU wants them back!
