If the Hillary-Lazio debates are indicative, Bush will only get half of the questions on topics he would like to address. I understand that Bush's 1.3 trillion dollar tax cut actually amounts to a 1.9 trillion reduction of revenue, when you take into account the interest normally earned on the receipts. The surplus, not including Social Security and Medicare is only 1.8 trillion dollars. My calculator says that 100 Billion dollars in brand spanking new debt is going to be heaped on our grandchildren in a Bush administration. That assumes that the massive stimulus to the economy does not rekindle inflation and a resession (plus worsening of our balance of payments as people buy imported goods with their refund checks).

-Edit - it also assumes that Bush drops any spending plans of his own or the new debt will be even higher - end edit-

Bush was accompanied Monday by his wife Laura. Her presence suggests that things are getting serious for the Bush camp. Mrs. Bush has not demonstrated much of an appetite for campaigning; she's been drawn out of Texas only for milestone events like primary vote nights, or when the governor has been on the ropes. She was at her husband's side for a few days during the ferocious push to win the South Carolina primary and again a week ago on the first day his new campaign slogan, Real Plans for Real People, was implemented.
