One of these years Altavista will get it right. I keep asking myself why they didn't IPO years ago? Altavista should be worth more now than what Compaq paid for all of DEC.

I think Vera Lynn (from IBM) was in charge of Altavista back in '96 when it looked like it was going somewhere and they were planning the original IPO. But then DEC management decided to cancel the IPO and then Lynn resigned immediately and joined some other i-net company.

Since then, it seems Altavista just wandered along adding different features to it's search engine and tacking on a fe other i-net companies in an ad-hoc manner. They never took a ground breaking role in the internet land grab.
