I agree.

However, today, I trust the federal government much more than I do 50 individual states to "do the right thing." Part of the reason we have a strong federal government today is that people like George Wallace gave a bad name to the term "states' rights."

Where we really disagree is that I would assign much greater weight to the federal government for carrying history forward.
