I'm equally puzzled. POS (the DRAM one) is up 7%; that's helping.

Anybody think that's a good short entry point? Only danger is the double bottom at $58 would indicate another day of smooth sledding.

Micron Technology (MU: news, msgs) shares advanced $3.50 to $62 after Chase H&Q started coverage of the memory component maker with a "strong buy" rating and a price target of $120 a share. Analyst Sudeep Balain said Chase expects spot prices for DRAMs to start edging forward in September as well as the second half of the year. Balain suggested investors buy Micron stock at the current levels.

Programmable logic device (PLD) makers Altera (ALTR: news, msgs) and Xilinx (XLNX: news, msgs) stock were both higher, with Altera jumping nearly 7 percent. PLDs allow electronics manufacturers to custom program logic chips to perform specific functions.

Meanwhile, Motorola's (MOT: news, msgs) computer group outlined its 2001 telecommunications push, saying it expects "significant" growth in sales next year. The computer group also plans to launch a two-tiered product strategy in 2001 aimed at supporting telecom original equipment manufacturers. Motorola shares rose 63 cents to $33.63.

Elsewhere, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD: news, msgs) stock surged $1.88 to $28.38.
