ING Barings analysts recently estimated that big regional telephone companies like SBC Communications Inc. together spend roughly $4 billion annually paying fees that are not reciprocated.

justone and Thread- I have to confess, as long as I have been following the telecom market, I have no idea what this is about? Maybe it's because it's not that significant a figure? Does the $4 billion refer to $4 billion out of the TOTAL local phone SP market? If so, that mean the ILEC appear to have to pay some kind of tax that amounts to $4 billion on $120 billion in revenues.

I really don't understand the argument on either the ILEC or the Consumer Union side. This whole apparent, "unreciprocated," federal tax just got by me. If anyone thinks it has strong consequences, please post your thoughts. Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
