NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, U.S.A., 2000 SEP 19 (NB) -- By Steve Gold, newsbytes. Net2Phone [NASDAQ:NTOP] has linked up with Cisco Systems [NASDAQ:CSCO] to form a joint venture firm to develop and market network management software for Voice over IP (VoIP) and other packet-based multimedia networks.
The creation of the new firm - Adir Technologies - marks an interesting move for Net2Phone, which has carved out a sizable niche for itself in the Internet telephony carrier stakes.
Net2Phone's problem, however, has been its reduced ability to break into the potentially lucrative business marketplace for VoIP services, mainly because of the relatively low profit margins limiting its reseller options.
Adir Technologies solves this problem, since the new firm will offer Net2Phone's VoIP management software and Internet telephony services to a variety of telecommunications, Internet, and wireless carriers, adding Cisco hardware where required.
Howie Balter, Net2Phone's CEO, said that one of hidden products for his firm has been its management platform. "While most telecom and Voice over IP equipment has been designed for heavy call processing, the software intelligence behind it has been lacking," he said.
Balter went on to say that, thanks to the formation of Adir, Net2Phone plans to enable service providers with the "brains behind the equipment," allowing them to realize the full value of their networks.
