Most Transplant Surgeons Believe Actual Need for Spare Organs Exceeds One Million Hearts and Lungs Annually.

PPH Cure Foundation Releases Results of Internet Survey of International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation
Membership

WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The PPH Cure Foundation announced today that 61% of transplant surgeons responding to an internet survey believe that 20% or more of heart disease deaths could be avoided with a spare organ, if organ scarcity were not an issue. In addition, 32% of the transplant surgeons thought that up to half or more of deaths due to heart failure could be avoided with a manmade organ, once these are available. These responses translate into a latent worldwide demand for over a million heart transplants annually. Most of the responding transplant surgeons also agreed that manmade organs such as xenografts or artificial hearts will be clinically feasible within ten years, thereby reducing the problem of organ scarcity that plagues transplant centers today. The PPH Cure Foundation is the world's largest non-government funder of research into cures for proliferative pulmonary hypertension (PPH), a life-threatening heart-lung disease.
