Gene, when filing continuation in parts, it is not the claims of the original patent that count but the specification. Often the specification ( and the original set of claims) will contain too many "independent" inventions, and the examiner is free to request that the first examination be on a specific invention, forcing the patentee to select the one on which he wants the examination to proceed on and then file additional continuations in parts or even divisional applications, all claiming the same priority date as th original application.
