This talk about chips and boxes misses the point in a major way. Since I've already (partially) explained it in another post I won't bother to again.

Forget what COBT's box looks like. Forget the AMD K6-2. Think: "I'm running a big company and I need to get into a new business that already knows the product, has a channel, has the right kind of attitude, and CAN BE BUILT QUICKLY into what I'm looking for."

It is not the case that they could have done the same thing by sending five guys to Fry's and buying some parts and sticking them in a garage. This is about business logistics and branding first, engineering DEAD last. They may have paid "too much", probably did, it's hard to argue against that. But it's also hard to come up with "fair" numbers until you've calculated opportunity costs that Ed Zander can calculate and we can't.

That's the gamble part. Time will tell. I have confidence in these guy's judgment about things like this.
