Vapor-launches are nothing new. This is exactly as I expected. AMD and Via will vapor-launch their DDR chipsets, but we won't see real volumes until much later.
Hypocrisy is also nothing new. Intel tried vapor-launches of higher-speed Pentium III's, and the anti-Intelabees joke and ridicule like there's no tomorrow. But hey, the "un-Intel" DDR chipsets are vapor-launched, and what happens? Those same people become apologetic.

Back in 1999, Scumbria posted often, warning everyone that "June is coming." That was the month Athlon was supposedly going to be released. What happened when June finally came around? AMD announces Athlon, but says the "real" release wouldn't occur until August. And even in August, AMD didn't make more than tens of thousands of Athlons for the summer.
Looks like the same thing is happening with AMD and Via's DDR chipsets.
