Why is that? I thought the value of the deal was branding, market-share, customers, and software. The hardware is dead last? Somebody wrote that on this thread today and I agree.

Why would they bother to invest engineering dollars in going to another processor from here, just to maintain instruction-set compatibility? None of their customers care about that.

I'd like bet they have already brought up the COBT software on a SPARC/Solaris box. This would be risk mitigation. We'll see whether they paid too much, but $2B isn't exorbitant. Micro$oft threw $10B down the toilet trying in vain to get a set-top-box design win. I know, I know, $10B is peanuts to Mr. $oftie, but eventually you run out of peanuts if you throw enough of them.
